It is officially fall- the weather is cool, nights are long, and the leaves are falling in golden drifts off of the trees.
Around this time of year in mid-coast Maine one sees a LOT of large pumpkins. That is because of Pumpkinfest, which is this coming weekend. Pumpkinfest started out as a fun local thing, and has become a rather large event. There are all kinds of different things going on- from the pumpkins that are decorated on Maine street, to the all important pumpkin regatta- yes, you can have a pumpkin boat, to pumpkin chunking, a pumpkin drop, pumpkin derbies for kids, and of course, pie eating contests!
Pumpkinfest is an offical event, and the weighing is done by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth- a world wide organization dedicated to the growth of large squash.
This year’s winner is Charlie Lopresti of Buxton, Maine. His pumpkin topped out at 1332.0 pounds! That is 604.19 Kg. That is one big puppy!
